Safety on the Internet

If you are concerned about the sorts of sites your children might visit when surfing the internet, consider the following:

  • Monitor their activity - Ask them what sites they visit and why. Set up the computer in a common area so you can keep an eye on them.
  • Use filtering software - these software products, such as Net Nanny, allow you to block selected web sites.

Please tell your children to follow these rules when using the internet.:

  • Never give away your name, address, password or any other personal details
  • Never meet someone you have contacted on the internet without your parent's/carer's permission, and then only when they can be present.
  • Never accept emails, open attachments or download files from people or organisations you don't know or trust - they may contain viruses or nasty messages
  • Someone online may not be who they say they are. If you feel uncomfortable or worried in a chat room, leave and tell your parent or guardian
  • Never use your parents' credit card without permission.
