Work to stop truanting
Research shows that if children attend school for
at least 90% of the time they will leave school with qualifications
and be able to get a job. In Dacorum, as part of a campaign widely
advertised in schools, the police stop any children they see in
parks and town centres during school hours to check they are not
truanting. If the children cannot prove they have a valid reason
for being outside school, letters are sent to their education
welfare officers and the school. The school follows the matter
up with the parents who have a responsibility to make sure their
children attend school.
The real power of this scheme is in making truancy
a much less attractive option since the child knows there is a
strong possibility that they will be found out.
