Work with the Elderly

Elderly people at lunch club in Tring with community policemeThe provision of social services for the elderly in Dacorum, such as care, is handled by Hertfordshire County Council. Their contact number for adult care services is 01438 737400.

The Borough Council staff work locally in the council housing schemes and assist the County Council in helping to identify the more isolated older people who do not ask for help and are not known to social services. They also have a major part to play in promoting crime prevention.

Older People's Directory

A new comprehensive guide to local services for older people in Dacorum is now available.

A collaboration between Dacorum Borough Council, Age Concern, Adult Care Services and the Dacorum Primary Care Trust, the 68 page booklet brings together relevant information and advice for older people.

Brian Trainor, Care Services Manager at Dacorum Borough Council explains the partnership approach, “In the past, we all produced our own directories. We got together and realised that we could make things much easier for our customers, and save money, if we put all the information together into one guide.

“The end result is a clear, easy to use listing of over a hundred organisations and groups that can help our older residents.”

The directory-style guide is organised into straightforward sections and includes benefits and financial advice, transport information, health services, leisure, and legal advice.

Winter fuel payments, guide dogs for the blind, the national osteoporosis society, meals on wheels, victim support, and community cars are examples of the wide variety of the groups and helplines that are listed in the guide.

Nicky Flynn from Age Concern Dacorum said, "When designing the book we took
into consideration the needs of our users to ensure that the book was easy
to use. The result is an inclusive guide that will be invaluable to older
people and those professionals advising older people."

Copies are being sent out to Age Concern and Dacorum Borough Council customers through sheltered housing schemes and Meals on Wheels and will also be available from information centres across the Borough. A copy will also be posted on the Dacorum Borough Council Website.
