Drink & Disorder Incidents - What can be done to stop them?

Powers brought in under a new Act mean that local authorities can ban public drinking of alcohol in specified areas when they are satisfied that drinking has caused a nuisance, annoyance or public disorder. In such a designated area, a police officer can stop a person drinking and force the surrender of any alcohol.

Before an order is granted the local authority must consult with the local police, licence holders and parish councils.

Failure to stop drinking alcohol in public when requested by a police constable and failure to hand over the alcohol when requested, could lead to arrest and, if prosecuted, a fine of up to £500.
