Stray Dogs

Starting from 6 April 2008, Dacorum Borough Council will be responsible for accepting stray dogs found by members of the public. The Police will continue to be responsible for dealing with dangerous dogs (including strays that are formally classified as dangerous because of their breed, such as Pitbull Terriers).

The Council already operates a Dog Warden Service that promotes responsible dog ownership in Dacorum, including dealing with some of the stray dogs in the Borough. However, this change will mean that more stray dogs will be dealt with by the Dog Warden.

If you find a stray dog, the new dedicated 24 hour line is 01442 228088. The collection point for the Borough will be Hemel Hempstead Civic Centre.

The Dog Warden Service micro-chips dogs to help identification of lost or stolen dogs, educates owners and children on responsible dog ownership, including giving talks and taking part in promotional events, and has enforcement powers to dealing with dog fouling. The service also oversees the emptying and maintenance of over 400 dog waste bins installed by the Council across the Borough.

The law states that, while in a public place, every dog should wear a collar with the name and address of its owner on it.

If you would like to talk to Dacorum Borough Council’s Dog Warden, telephone 01442 228418 or email sarah.lewis@dacorum.gov.uk
