Dog Microchipping
Micro-chipping is a very simple and quick procedure,
done in the comfort of your own home by a
trained officer and provides a permanent method of identification.
A small electronically coded micro-chip the size of a grain of
rice is inserted under the animal's skin. The micro-chip provides
access to a national database of information about the dogs owners
including contact numbers and addresses, much more than could
be included on a collar or tag. This allows a dog to be re-united
with its owners, should it become separated, in a very short space
of time.
This could be particularly beneficial if a dog was
to stray or be lost for example on holiday, or in area they didn't
know. Many vets, the police and Council Dog Wardens have the scanner
needed to read the chip and access the necessary information to
reunite dogs and owners.
The procedure takes just five minutes, is painless
and costs £21.15 or £10.58
if you are a Dacorum Card Holder.
Last year (2006), 139 dogs which
weren't microchipped were brought into the council's kennels,
while others with microchips could be returned to their owners
straight away.
