Dog Fouling

By law, owners must clean up after their dog when it fouls in any public place.

Click here for more detail on the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996.

In England the main legislation relating to dog fouling is dealt with under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (Part IV) .

Dacorum Borough Council has approximately 430 dog bins across the district for the disposal of dog waste. You can be issued with a fixed penalty notice, currently £75, if you are witnessed not clearing up after your dog or you can be taken to court and face a fine of up to £1,000.

Dog fouling is a health hazard and is anti-social. The faeces of a dog can transmit diseases to other dogs and humans, especially young children who walk or play in it unawares and may then transfer it to their hands and on to their mouths.

Want to report persistent dog fouling in your neighbourhood? Ring the Environmental Health department of the Borough Council on 01442 228418 between 9.00am and 5.00pm or email sarah.lewis@dacorum.gov.uk. It is always easier for the Environmental Health Service to bring a prosecution if a photo of the offence can be produced and evidence submitted.
