Anti-Social Behaviour Orders
Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) are more serious
than Acceptable Behaviour Contracts and are made by the Courts.
Introduced by the Government in April 1999, they may result in
a prison term if they are breached.
ASBO’s are civil proceedings and prohibit
behaviour and sometimes access to certain areas. They can include
curfews and exclusion areas and if breached become a matter of
criminal law. They can last for a maximum of 10 years and a minimum
of 2 years and, if breached, are punishable with a maximum prison
term of up to 5 years.
They are designed to show that bad behaviour which
disrupts the lives of individuals, families or communities will
not be tolerated. Only a handful of ASBOs have been applied for
by Dacorum Borough Council but they have been very successful
in stopping problems and will be used in the future if appropriate.
