The Sunflower Project

The Sunflower Project opened a centre of Hemel in 2004, in response to the high number of incidents of domestic violence in Dacorum.

Social workers, health workers and police officers trained in domestic violence will work together under one roof in the heart of the community to provide a rapid, co-ordinated response for victims of Domestic Violence (Helpline 08088 088 088)/Hate Crime and rape. Trained workers from well known charities like Relate (marriage guidance) and Victim Support will also work in the same building. This is called a “multi-agency approach” and means that victims will not be shuttled from one place to another or one agency to another as the case is investigated. Cases will be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Quiet rooms will be provided in which to offer support, advice and a comfortable, confidential place to interview vulnerable victims and witnesses. A crèche and a comfortable bedroom and bathroom will also be provided to allow victims to rest and recover.

The overall aim of the Sunflower Project is to provide a drop-in centre which everyone can get to easily. Once inside they will be given the help, support and advice necessary to make it less likely that the same thing will happen to them again.
