Reducing Dangerous Driving

Hertfordshire Constabulary reports that driving over the speed limit is the main cause of the high number of car accidents in the Borough. Vehicle patrol police officers are targeting dangerous and inconsiderate drivers and will prosecute wherever possible.

The police are also working closely with the County Council Road Safety Unit to educate drivers and improve awareness. Drivers involved in minor accidents are encouraged to take a recognised course in advanced driving skills and road awareness as an alternative to a fine.

Speed limit signs, marking on the road and pinch points are all used by the County Council, working in co-operation with the police, to prevent speeding.

Speed cameras are used as a last resort at points where there is a high casualty rate. No attempt is made to trick or surprise drivers: advance warning signs and the bright yellow housing of the cameras themselves make them easy to see. Their prime purpose is not to raise funds for the Government, but to bring about improvements at accident blackspots.

Members of the public who witness speeding and other forms of dangerous driving should report the matter in as much detail as possible to the local police station.

Ring 01438 737320 (Hertfordshire County Council) if you have any comments on the day-to-day repairs of roads and pavements, the refurbishing of worn-out roads, winter gritting, accident site investigation or road safety.
