Common Themes
We are bringing down burglary, car crime, violence,
anti-social behaviour and drug use in Dacorum and giving residents
authoritative information about risks.
We consider the following eight priorities as key
to big reductions in crime:
- Supporting Victims - the police and other agencies
refer victims of crime to Victim Support, Dacorum. Part of a
national organisation, Victim Support is a charity which helps
people recover from the emotional trauma of crime, and works
to lessen fear of crime and repeat victimisation. Victim Support
also works to promote victim’s rights and campaigns for
changes in legislation.
- Cutting down on the number of repeat offenders
- 18% of people arrested have previous convictions. A small
number of repeat offenders are responsible for a large proportion
of crime
- Using CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) as a deterrent,
to record crime incidents and to identify offenders.
- Improve housing and the chance of finding employment
- people who have decent housing and a job are much less likely
to turn to crime as a way of getting money.
- Encourage the reporting of crime and encourage
people to come forward as witnesses without fear of reprisals.
- Tackle Youth Offending - offences by those under
20 years old account for 28% of crimes.
- Working with health professional, educate young
people and adults about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle
and the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
- Look after the vulnerable in the community like
the young, old, disabled and ethnic minorities.
