| Threat of increased
Domestic Violence during World Cup
With just days until the 2010 Football World Cup
kicks off, Dacorum's Community Safety Partnership,
including the Borough Council and the police, is aiming
to show a red card to domestic violence through increased
awareness raising.
As summer temperatures soar, alcohol flows and England's
performance is watched by the nation, it's a time
of anticipation, excitement and hope.
However for victims of domestic abuse, it's also
a time of fear and worry about both their own and
children's safety.
Sadly, win or lose, heightened emotions fuelled by
alcohol come into play and domestic violence attacks
increase.
Figures from the Home Office report about the 2006
Football World Cup revealed a shocking 25% average
increase in domestic violence on the five England
match days in the tournament.
Chair of the Community Safety Partnership, Cllr Colette
Wyatt-Lowe says, "Football is described as 'the
beautiful game' but the worrying figures from the
2006 World Cup show that for many people something
that should be about enjoyment turns ugly. The Dacorum
Community Safety Partnership would like to reassure
victims of domestic violence that there is protection
and support available in Dacorum."
In Dacorum anyone who is suffering physical or mental
abuse, or worried about their own behaviour towards
