POLICE REMINDER TO DOUBLE LOCK YOUR UPVC DOORS - DACORUM

POLICE are reminding people not to make it easy for burglars following further incidents in Hemel Hempstead recently where offenders have gained entry to properties through insecure windows and doors.

Incidents include the following:

• The Apple Orchard - Between 10.30pm on Wednesday, July 14, and 6am on Thursday, July 15, offender(s) have forced entry to the front UPVC door.
A car (a silver Volvo saloon), a laptop, mobile phones, wallet, cash, handbag, purse, and perfume were taken.
• Woodland Close – Between 10.30pm on Wednesday, July 14, and 6am on Thursday, July 15, offender(s) have gained entry to the property and stolen the car (a blue Vauxhall Vectra) parked on the driveway.

If anyone has any information about these incidents or saw any suspicious behaviour in the areas please call police on 0845 33 00 222.

David Mahon, Crime Prevention Officer for Dacorum, said: “We are seeing time and time again that people are not double locking (deadlocking) their UPVC doors which can make a property incredibly susceptible to being burgled. I cannot stress enough the importance of double locking (deadlocking) all UPVC doors – make sure you lift the handle and lock it when you go to bed or leave your home.”

Residents can help to reduce their chances of becoming a victim of burglary by taking note of the following advice:

• Make sure you double-lock any UPVC doors by lifting the handle and locking it (to engage the security features) before you go to bed or leave your home (if you remove the key make sure you have a fire escape plan).
• Check all doors are locked and all windows, including those upstairs, are secure before you go out .
• Consider installing alarms and ‘dusk to dawn' security lighting.
• Secure your rear garden - lock your shed, shut and lock any gates and keep fences maintained. Don't leave ladders and tools outside - they could be used by a burglar.
• Use timer switches on lamps to give the impression somebody is at home.
• At home, keep all loose valuables out of sight of any would-be thieves.
• Don't leave any boxes which advertise to thieves what's available in your home outside by the dustbin. Where possible, keep your wheelie bin a good distance behind the gate or fence to prevent them being used to get into the garden.
• Post code marking your valuables with a UV pen and registering them on a free property database like www.immobilise.com can work as a deterrent to thieves and can increase the chances of your property being recovered if it is stolen.
