Community needs your voice with policing in Hertsfordshire

iag

In case you have not heard of ‘Herts IAG’ and how they might be able to advise Hertfordshire’s police in diverse communities then read on.

Hertfordshire Independent Advisory Group is an independent group of people from diverse communities who advise the police to achieve safety, justice and reassurance for all the communities within Hertfordshire. IAG’s were initially formed in the wake of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry in 1999 in the Metropolitan Police Area, but recognising the value of such a body, Hertfordshire’s group originally came together in 2002.

Now the group is looking to expand its membership more widely
across the county to ensure it reflects as many individuals and communities as it possibly can.

Since its inception the Hertfordshire IAG has advised the Constabulary on a number of critical community issues following the 9:11 and 7:7 bombings in New York and London and the screening of the documentary Secret Policeman.

Herts IAG also assists the police in increasing trust and confidence for all of the communities in Hertfordshire and in particular amongst those from the minority and vulnerable groups such as Disabilities, Age, Gender, Race, Faith and Sexual Ordination.

Anyone from a community group that feels under-represented in having a say in the way policing is delivered and who is happy to challenge police business please get in touch with us.

“Don’t just complain to friends and neighbours about issues that concern you in your community- make a difference by joining the Hertfordshire Independent Advisory Group. I always wanted to put something back into the community and supporting the work of the IAG has helped me do this. The police are interested in listening to the opinions of the communities they serve and the IAG is a great way to convey viewpoints and comments,” said Chris Auker-Howlett, Communication Lead for Herts IAG.

IAG members can be, called to give advice over the phone, they generally attend four meetings per year, give advice on policies and training and on some occasions come to a police station to give face to face advice on operations or incidents.
