Flags for Dacorum
Canal Fields in Berkhamsted and Chipperfield Common
have today (17 July) been awarded the prestigious
Green Flag Award, the national standard for parks
and green spaces in England and Wales; and they are
the first green spaces in Dacorum to achieve the standard.
To be awarded a Green Flag a park or green space must
reach a set of key criteria, including being a welcoming
place, healthy, safe and secure, well maintained and
clean. An assessment is made against the criteria
by an independent judging team, involving a visit
to the site and a desk assessment of the site’s
management plan.
Canal Fields, close to Berkhamsted town centre is
an attractive and pleasant place for local people
and visitors to enjoy. The site benefits from grass
areas, trees, waterways, as well as a well equipped
play area and skate park.
Chipperfield Common is the largest woodland in Dacorum
and is undoubtedly the best known feature in Chipperfield.
It has an area of 47.5 hectares, and is a great place
to go to experience the feeling of the countryside
and to get close to nature.
Councillor Herbert Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Environment
and Sustainability said ''We know how important our
precious green spaces are to local people and that
is why we are absolutely committed to making sure
they are safe, welcoming and well maintained. These
Green Flag successes recognise the commitment made
by the Council, particularly the park's staff, who
continue to work in partnership with Chipperfield
Parish Council, Berkhamsted Town Council, Berkhamsted
Youth Town Council, Berkhamsted Community Partnership,
Countryside Management Service, Chiltern Chalk Streams
Project and Canal and Riverside Partnership.
The Borough Council, with representatives from Chipperfield
Parish Council and Berkhamsted Town Council will collect
the awards at a ceremony at the end of the month.
