Dog bin sponsorship supports 'clean up' call

Dacorum Borough Council has secured a sponsorship deal to help fund dog bins across the Borough and raise awareness of the importance of responsible pet ownership.

The two-year deal involves notices placed on 440 bins by sponsor, Drontal, encouraging dog owners to clean up after their pets.

As National Poop Scoop Week comes to a close the Council is hoping that the messages on the bins will encourage dog owners to "Grab it, Bag It, Bin It" and make 2009 the cleanest summer ever.

Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Engagement, Cllr Colette Wyatt-Lowe says: "At this time of year in particular people want to be outdoors enjoying our parks and open spaces. The last thing they want is to come across dog mess which as well as being unpleasant also carries health risks. Drontal's valuable support will raise awareness of the importance of picking up after your pet and helps cover the cost of maintaining and emptying the bins."

Jennie Domican from Drontal, comments:"Through our sponsorship of Dacorum Borough Council's dog bins we are highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership which includes preventing the spread of worm eggs in the environment by scooping your pet's poop."

Dog faeces can carry a variety of worms, including roundworm, which can infect people.  Children are particularly at risk as roundworms are typically picked up from worm eggs in contaminated soil.  The worm larvae migrate through the body, and if they find themselves behind the retina they can cause permanent damage to the child's eyesight.

National Poop Scoop week advice to dog owners includes the following:

  • Grab it - Make sure you have a supply of poop scoop bags near your dog's lead so that you remember to take a bag with you every time you walk your dog.
  • Bag it - Put your hand in the plastic bag to pick up your dog's waste and then 'bag it' safely by carefully turning the bag inside out and tying the top.
  • Bin it - Put your bagged waste into the nearest dog waste bin.
